In this blog, we will explore the issues surrounding the amount of clothes that end up in landfills and discuss what consumers can do to help create a more sustainable future.

The problem with clothing waste is that ‘fast fashion’ has become a major trend in recent years, with clothing becoming cheaper and more disposable. As a result, consumers are buying more clothes than ever before, and the clothing they purchase is often discarded after only a few wears. For example, the average person in the United States throws away over 30 kg’s of clothing and other textiles each year, and only 15% of that waste is recycled or donated. This has led to an overwhelming amount of clothing waste in landfills, which has serious environmental implications.

When clothing is sent to landfills, it takes years to decompose. Synthetic fabrics, such as polyester and nylon, can take hundreds of years to break down, and natural fabrics, such as cotton and wool, can take several months to several years. As these fabrics decompose, they release harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, including methane and carbon dioxide. In addition, the chemicals used to dye and treat fabrics can leach into the soil and water, causing pollution.

What we can do?! Consumers have the power to make a difference in the fashion industry and reduce clothing waste. Here are some steps that you can take to create a more sustainable future:

Buy Quality Clothing

Invest in high-quality clothing that will last longer and resist wear and tear. Look for clothes made from sustainable materials, such as organic cotton, bamboo, and recycled fabrics. These fabrics are better for the environment and often last longer than synthetic fabrics.

Choose Second-Hand Clothing

Consider buying second-hand clothing from charity shops or online marketplaces. Not only does this reduce clothing waste, but it also supports a circular economy. You can find unique and affordable clothing pieces that are often in excellent condition.

Donate or Sell Unwanted Clothing

If you have clothing that you no longer wear, donate it to a local charity or sell it online. This gives your clothes a second life and keeps them out of landfills. It also feels good to give!

Repair Clothing

Instead of throwing away clothing that is damaged or torn, learn to repair it, I know it’s ancient, but why not?! There are plenty of resources online that can teach you basic mending skills, such as sewing on a button or fixing a small tear.

Most Importantly, Practice Minimalism

Be mindful of your clothing purchases and only buy what you need. This helps reduce the demand for fast fashion and minimizes clothing waste.

All in all we can say that the fashion industry has a significant impact on the environment, and the amount of clothing waste in landfills is a serious problem, but you can help create a more sustainable future by buying quality or second-hand clothes, donating or selling unwanted clothing, repairing clothes, and practicing minimalism. By taking these steps, we can reduce clothing waste and create a more sustainable fashion industry as well as a more sustainable world.

Sign up to our mailing list to receive tips on how to be more sustainable along with news about newly released sustainable tees and hoodies from us.

Canned Wine - Sustainable.
